Netflix’s newest plan is much cheaper than Netflix’s existing plan, but it comes with a huge caveat - you can only access a fraction of the platform’s TV shows and movies due to licensing restrictions. The Basic with Ads plan is available for $6.99 per month. It features an average of four to five minutes of ads per hour, with each ad being up to 30 seconds long. Greg Peters, Netflix’s Chief Product Officer as well as Chief Operating Officer, announced in a recent sit-down with reporters that work was ongoing on regaining access to some of the restricted movies on the new subscription plan. However, the terms of Netflix’s licensing agreement with these networks might forbid Netflix from running ads on them for the remainder of their licensing periods, thereby eliminating them from being shown on the Basic with Ads tier. Here’s a short list of some of the movies and shows not available on the ad-supported tier:
The Imitation Game The Hateful Eight Morbius Sing 2 Rambo Vice Skyfall Robin Hood Steve Jobs Made of Honor Legend The Butler Casino Royale, Peaky Blinders Queen of the South House of Cards Arrested Development New Girl
Basic with Ads comes after Netflix experienced two bad quarters in a row, losing millions of subscribers. The company has since restructured its original content plan and dropped a lot of in-development shows as well introduced the more affordable subscription plan. Fortunately, the company bounced back from its first-and-second-quarter losses in the third quarter. The platform witnessed an influx of over 2.4 million paid subscribers during the third quarter. Apart from the restrictions, Basic with Ads will also not enable viewers to download titles for offline viewing, limit video quality to 720P HD, and allow streaming only to one device. The tier is currently available in the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Canada, France, Germany, Brazil, Australia, and Korea. Netflix will release the plan in Spain on November 10. In other Netflix news, fans have threatened to boycott the streaming platform if it continues with its The Witcher casting change. Also, the platform’s psychological thriller series You is coming back for its fourth season in February and March.
