Diesel has played the role of Riddick in three movies so far: 2000’s Pitch Black, 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick, and 2013’s Riddick. Neither of the three films might have been responsible for turning Diesel into a household name, but they’ve still earned him a spot in the hearts of sci-fi fans, which is notoriously hard to do. As a bonus, the Riddick films is one of the few franchises to have a good video game adaptation. 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Buther Bay and 2009’s The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena are both largely considered commercial, as well as critical successes. Having said that, fans have been asking for Diesel to have another go at the prison-breaking and bright-eyed Riddick. Unfortunately, details about the long-rumored sequel have been scarce - until now.
Is a New Riddick Game in the Works?
GamesRadar was able to sit down with the blockbuster actor to talk about his latest Fast film, F9. In the said interview, the F9 lead actor provided fans some much-needed update about a potential Riddick movie sequel, as well as a new Riddick game. Diesel claims that David Twohy, the franchise’s longtime director, already has a great script available and that it’s only a “matter of time” before they start filming. “I imagine we would take advantage of the gaming space and add an extra chapter”, says Diesel, when talking about a potential fourth film installment. However, fans shouldn’t be quick to get their hopes high up. Diesel has talked about a new Riddick game for years. A Chronicles of Riddick MMO was even teased shortly following the release of 2013’s Riddick, but nothing ever came of that. While Diesel is known for portraying hyper-masculine characters in movies, in real life, Diesel has a well-established love for all things “geeky”. A good example of this is how the 2015 film, The Last Witch Hunter, came to be. It’s common knowledge that the fantasy action film came to fruition because of Diesel talking to screenwriters about his Witch Hunter character in Dungeons & Dragons. Another fairly famous example of Diesel doing things “nerdy” is staying up all night with Ronda Rousey to play World of Warcraft while filming Fast and Furious 7. Ultimately, it looks like it’ll be a while before we see a new Riddick film or video game. There aren’t any concrete plans in place right now. However, at least a film script is available. All that’s left is for the proverbial ball to start rolling. After that, it’s only a matter of time before a new Riddick video game is released. If it’s any consolation, fans can play as Diesel in a game that’s going to be available soon. Diesel is expected to star in ARK 2, which should release in 2022.
